Hello,
I am uploading a text file with excerpts from each document in each line. And so i don't move on to the side by side line unless it'southward an extract from some other certificate. I sympathize that by doing so, the program will read each line every bit a new source/document.
I now just want to clarify the difference between full and binary counting.
For binary, the manual states, "the Occurrences attribute indicates the number of documents in which a term occurs at least one time". Does this hateful that if nosotros opt to choose terms that occur at least twice, the program would then find terms that occur in at least ii documents (or lines)? Or does the plan observe terms that occur at least twice in a certificate?
For full, the transmission states "the full number of occurrences of a term in all documents". Does this mean that if we opt to choose terms that occur at least twice, the program would then find terms that occur at least twice in the entire text file (regardless of whether or not a document/line contains the word)? Or does the program detect terms that occur at least twice in a document?
Thank you.Respond
-
In the example of binary counting, VOSviewer will select all terms that occur in at least two documents (regardless of the number of times they occur in these documents). In the example of full counting, VOSviewer will select all terms that occur at least twice in the corpus, either in ii different documents or two times in the same document.
Answer
-
Thank you very much for your quick response! To farther clarify, for binary counting: if nosotros opt for i occurrence, so does the line between two terms demonstrate that they both occur in at least the same judgement in a document? And if we opt for two occurrences, then does the line betwixt two terms demonstrate that they both occur in at least the aforementioned sentence in a document or does it hateful at to the lowest degree two same documents? Furthermore, the thicker the line the more frequent that both terms appear together? Give thanks you lot.
Reply
-
Co-occurrences of terms are identified at the document level, not at the sentence level. A link betwixt two terms therefore indicates that the terms occur together in at to the lowest degree one document, but not necessarily in the same judgement. Indeed, the thicker the line, the larger the number of co-occurrences of two terms.
Reply
-
I see. And so, for binary counting, if I opt for a minimum of two occurrences, would I be correct then in saying the following statements: "VOSviewer will select all terms that occur in at least 2 documents (regardless of the number of times they occur in these documents)". The more prominent a term is on the map, the more documents this term occurs in. In terms of co-occurrences, if a term is linked to another term on the map, it means that, individually, both terms occur in at least 2 documents (not necessarily the same documents), only they co-occur in at to the lowest degree one document and, the more prominent the link, the more documents they both occur in.
Answer
-
In improver to my last question I also have the following questions. (1) i uploaded a corpus file into VOSviewer with text from just 1 certificate. i made certain that all the text are in just one line (i utilize Notepad++ which shows you each line that is in use). In this case, for binary counting, obviously the only occurrence is 1. Each identified term also had a relevance score of one.00. Afterwards generating the map, I noticed that non all terms link to all the other terms. Shouldn't they all link to each other given that they are all from the same document and VOSviewer identifies co-occurrences at the document level? (ii) For the thesaurus file: a term in the characterization column must exist a noun phrase (i.e., without a preposition) just it can be replaced past a term with a preposition? So, for case, I cannot supervene upon "quality of life" with "QoL", only I tin supercede "QoL" with "quality of life"? This means that for terms such as "quality of life" and "research and development" i would have to supercede them in the corpus file with noun phrases or abbreviations (such equally QoL and RD) and then that they evidence up in the map? (3) Is there a faster way to obtain a list of terms that VOSviewer identifies with a minimum of 1 occurrence without saving the map.txt file? I noticed that there are long noun phrases that I don't need, but they take short substantive phrases that I exercise need. For example, VOSviewer identifies "artifical neural network", simply i simply want "network". I take it so that I would have to use the thesaurus file to supervene upon "artifical neural network" with "network"? If and then, is there a way to populate the list of terms so that I tin can just re-create them into my thesaurus file and add the "replace by" terms for the labels that I do demand, without having to generate the map in the showtime place? Thank yous for your time in responding to our queries!

(i) Yes, they should indeed all link to each other. Possibly the number of links in your map exceeds the maximum number of links shown by VOSviewer? By default, VOSviewer shows a maximum of 1000 links.
(2) No, I'1000 afraid this is not possible. Prepositions will exist ignored, also when yous use a thesaurus file.

Hi!
I have a basic question. If we import bibliographic data files from various sources such as both web of science and scopus, does VOSviewer aggregate the references with recognition of repeated sources?Reply
-
I am afraid it is not possible in VOSviewer to combine data from different data sources.
Answer
-
Depending on how many references you lot have, mayhap you could attempt combining both into one text file; just make sure that you format them the same. I had a minor number of WoS references then I was able to format their biblio data as per Scopus' format (a boring process even with just a small number of references) so add the re-formatted WoS references into your Scopus text file to upload into VOSviewer.

I'm currently on VOsviewer version i.half-dozen.18; I'm also using a MacBook Pro 2020 (MacOS Monterey) with Retention = 8 GB.
I consulted the Manual, but I'yard non entirely sure on the steps or what exactly to do to increase the availability of retention. Also I'm not sure on how to run the VOSviewer from the command line and enter those commands.
Whatsoever assistance or stride-by-step guide would be then appreciated!

In the Most dialog box in VOSviewer, you can come across the corporeality of memory to which VOSviewer has access. If VOSviewer already has admission to nearly memory in your computer, it won't be possible to increase the amount of retentivity that VOSviewer can use. Otherwise y'all could indeed follow the steps discussed in the manual to increase the corporeality of memory that tin be used by VOSviewer. However, I am afraid I cannot offer further assistance with this. My communication is to enquire for aid from a local ICT expert who knows how to work with the command line.

Howdy,
I promise this message finds you well. Cheers for the software development. It is very helpful!
I would similar to check three information:
(I) Is there a default clustering algorithm? I enquire this because I am generating a VOSViewer network view from the Bibliometrix R package and no matter which algorithm I use in the R networkPlot role, the same network (with the same clusters) is generated in VOSViewer (when the clusterization should be different depending on the algorithm entered);
(2) Is there a maximum amount of nodes entered in a network view in VOSViewer? I ask this because when I endeavour to open up a large network (more than than 50000 nodes) in VOSViewer from the Bibliometrix R bundle using the "net2VOSviewer" role (https://github.com/massimoaria/bibliometrix/hulk/primary/R/net2VOSviewer.R), I get the error: "Error reading Pajek network file: Incorrect utilize of quotes". And the mistake does non appear when the amount of nodes is smaller;
(Iii) Is the maximum view of the links (connection between nodes) actually 10000? Because I have a network with more than 300000 links, and it would be very useful to come across all their connections in VOSViewer.
Cheers very much.
Best regards,Reply
-
VOSviewer is non intended for visualizing very large networks. Other tools, such as Gephi, are more suitable for this. We recommend to have at most 10000 items in your network. Your network may consists of more than 10000 links between items, but the maximum number of links that can be visualized by VOSviewer is 10000. I am agape I don't understand your first question. The VOSviewer manual provides some information virtually the clustering technique used by VOSviewer, including a link to the relevant research papers.

Thank you very much for your quick reply, Ludo!
In my first question I was referring to clustering algorithms such equally "optimal","edge betweenness", "louvain", "infomap", "walktrap", "spinglass", "leading eigen", etc - which indicates the type of cluster (agregation between the publications).
I haven't found this specification explicitly at VOSviewer manual, which is why I asked here. What I did find was the indication of using an "optimization algorithm" and the linked research papers - which indicate the Newman algorithm. So I'm still not certain if VOSviewer uses the optimal algorithm, Newman'due south algorithm, or any other. I'm pitiful if it'south still unclear. Once once more, thank you!Reply

The clustering technique used by VOSviewer is documented in the following paper: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.joi.2010.07.002 (preprint: https://arxiv.org/abs/1006.1032). To optimize the quality function of this clustering technique, VOSviewer uses the Leiden algorithm, documented in the following paper: https://doi.org/x.1038/s41598-019-41695-z.

Hi Ludo
Hither are the steps that I chose to create the map:
1-Create a map based on bibliographic information
ii-read data from bibliographic database files
3-upload Scopus CSV file in the correct section
iv-chose co-occurrence / unit of analysis: all keywords / counting model: full counting
5-occurrence of keyword adjusted to 3
vi- and so clicked adjacent and finished
My question is related to the clusters obtained after following the to a higher place steps. Based on what are these words distributed to the relevant clusters?

Indeed the use of Google Scholar information in VOSviewer is almost impossible. It is very difficult to extract pregnant amounts of data from Google Scholar. VOSviewer used to provide support for working with Microsoft Bookish data, which could serve every bit an alternative to Google Scholar. VOSviewer enables users to query OpenAlex through its API. However, this functionality is withal in an early stage of development, so the possibilities are limited. If you lot want to do a co-occurrence assay of terms extracted from titles and abstracts of publications, make sure to choose the option 'Create a map based on text information' instead of 'Create a map based on bibliographic data'. If yous desire to do a co-occurrence analysis of the keywords of publications, the availability of this choice depends on the data source you lot are using. Some data sources support this option, while others practise non.

Dimensions has a special export feature for VOSviewer. Make sure to use this feature. Don't use the RIS format. Bibliometric assay tin can utilise visualization methods that are analogous to main components assay of central word association. In this approach, the user seeks to gauge factors that define master domains of association and then position articles in quadrants defined by the two principal orthogonal components. The relative concentration of articles that are positioned permits visualization of association. This is helpful in distinguishing associations that are cross-cut versus articles that business organisation themes that are focused inside an estimated domain. And, shapes of visualized clusters vary, depending upon the relationship of clusters to master components. Fourth dimension of publication tin can exist visualized, permitting the user to report trends in ideational associations. Tin can VOSViewer be used for trend analysis or interpretive analysis that the PCA approach facilitates?
Answer
-
Yes, VOSviewer can exist used for this. Similar PCA, VOSviewer visualizations aim to place the cardinal patterns in a high-dimensional information set up by presenting the data in a low-dimensional space. The differences between PCA and VOSviewer are similar to those between PCA and multi-dimensional scaling. While these approaches all present high-dimensional data in a depression-dimensional space, the interpretation of the depression-dimensional space is somewhat different in the different approaches.
For trend analyses, VOSviewer offers overlay visualizations, enabling time trends to be visualized using colors.Answer

Is in that location a publication likewise the manual that provides a concise summary of what relevance scores are based on for creating a keyword co-occurrence map?
I'chiliad trying to decide whether creating a bibliographic or text map better suits the keyword co-occurrences, and am wondering how those make up one's mind keywords differently? Using the aforementioned datafile, the methods vary by about 200 keywords and vary widely in the number of terms that meet the minimum threshold. Wondering how the methods differ.
Thank you,

Maps of keywords don't utilize relevance scores. Maps of terms extracted from titles and abstracts practice use such scores. Unfortunately, we don't have a full documentation of the algorithm used for calculating the relevance scores. The best documentation we have can exist found in the post-obit short paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/1109.2058.

Hi, I accept a question on harmonization of journals titles in CVC file from Scopus. If I normalize the titles, my file tin can't be read by VOSviewer. Would you please help to solve this problem? Thank you!
Respond

My advice is not to make any changes in CSV files exported from Scopus. This usually causes issues. Instead, you can create a so-called thesaurus file to harmonize journal titles. Encounter the VOSviewer manual for more than information about thesaurus files.

Thank you! It worked. I created a thesaurus file.
Simply now at that place is another problem - when I create co-authorship - countries several affiliation is incorrect in Scopus so CSV file has wrong information. I compared affiliation information with the newspaper and check amalgamation.
Example - Scopus gives 17 documents for Autralia, but the right number is 18; 108 for USA, simply the right number is 107. A cited document for Australia give USA past fault. So my question is what should I practice in this situation? I guess a thesaurus file won't help in this case. If I leave it as information technology is then I will nowadays incorrect information which is not good for a inquiry paper.
Could you please help with this?
Thanks!Reply

That's an interesting question. Your VOSviewer map volition give an authentic representation of the information provided by the Scopus database, but indeed it may not give an authentic representation of the information independent in the actual underlying research articles. I recall it is important to make the distinction between these 2 types of accuracy.
If your VOSviewer map doesn't give a fully accurate representation of the information independent in the research manufactures, I believe this is a limitation that you need to acknowledge in whatever paper or report in which you lot present the VOSviewer map. Still, small-scale inaccuracies won't fundamentally affect your conclusions, and having such inaccuracies is almost inevitable in whatever data analysis of significant size, so in my view this doesn't invalidate your piece of work.Reply

Dear respected Prof Ludo,
I'm trying to analyse citations and years based on the data gathered from WOS (txt file), past VOSviewer.
I selected" to create a map based on bibliographic information" in the next phase, I selected "read information from bibliographic database files".
However, I can't choose citation etc. I tin can only choose co-authorship (I mean it's non optional). That'southward why I can't proceed my analysis.
Tin you lot assistance me please to resolve my problem about mapping citations and other options.
Kind regards,
PhD MelikeReply

When exporting information from Web of Science, information technology is of import to cull the option 'Full Record and Cited References'. If cited references are not included in the data exported from Web of Science, VOSviewer won't be able to create a citation-based map.

Hello, over again.
I've generated co-authorship maps for authors, organizations, and countries. I've cleaned the affiliation column so that the format is "organization proper name, country; organization name, state". Notwithstanding, while my authors and countries maps are showing both nodes and lines, my organizations map is just showing nodes. Have I missed something?
Cheers.Answer

Hello,
I eventually realized that the lines weren't showing considering there weren't enough links between the nodes. Yet, if I opted to only view the nodes with the links, the lines practise appear.Reply

Hi, and I thank you for your useful software. How tin can I see just ane cluster in the screen?
Reply

I am afraid there is no easy way to reach this. You need to save your map in a VOSviewer map file, open this file in a spreadsheet program such as MS Excel, and delete all lines corresponding to items that practice not belong to the cluster that y'all are interested in.

Hello Nees and Ludo,
Thank you for this wonderful tool. I was looking if this folio has a proper citation link and couldn't find it. Would you kindly share if you have a link to cite VOSviewer?
Regards.Reply

Thanks for asking. Nearly VOSviewer users cite the post-obit paper: https://doi.org/x.1007/s11192-009-0146-3. This is the paper in which the VOSviewer software was originally introduced.

Hello! Kickoff of all I would like to congratulate yous for the tool and besides cheers so much for letting u.s. use it!. The programme works very well with the database I constructed to my master study. I would like to know if is it possible to take off some labels, in order to highlight the most important ones.
Thanks in advance!Reply
-
Yeah, this can be washed past saving your map in a VOSviewer map file, opening the map file in a spreadsheet program such as MS Excel, and deleting the labels (in the 'label' column) that you want to get rid of. When you then open your map in VOSviewer, the labels that have been deleted will no longer exist visible, and this provides more space for showing the labels of other items in your map.
